Crews Work To Repair Broken Water Main In Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Only one lane of a crucial Hollywood street was open Thursday after a water main break flooded an apartment building's subterranean parking garage and damaged two units.

The 12-inch water main ruptured just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of N. Cahuenga Boulevard, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

"We've got about an eight-foot split on the pipe, which is a break on the pipe longitudinally," Mike Miller, District Supervisor of the Department of Water and Power, said.

DWP crews were called to the scene around 8 p.m. to fix the broken pipe and continued to work through the night.

"They'll actually cut a section of pipe out and installed a new piece of pipe," Miller said.

Service to approximately 30 residential buildings was interrupted as a result, officials said. Crews hope to restore water to those structures and repair the 82-year-old pipe by noon.

"We have probably on average two main breaks per day, just depends on which neighborhood, where and how bad," Miller told KNX1070's Dick Helton.

DWP officials expect Cahuenga Boulevard will be fully reopened around 2 p.m. Thursday.

It was unclear what caused the pipe to burst.
