LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A car theft suspect died at the hospital after being taken into custody by Long Beach police.

Officers were called to the scene at 6:47 p.m. on Saturday and found two industrial property security guards detaining the suspect close to a fence in the 6200 block of Paramount Avenue on Saturday.

The suspect had been found on private property, entering employees’ vehicles.

Long Beach police hundcuffed the suspect, who is described only as a male in his 20s or 30s, at which point he experienced a “medical distress”, according to authorities.

The man had allegedly attempted to steal a car from the security guards, and a struggle ensued.

The suspect then reportedly attempted to flee, but the security guards caught him as he tried to jump a fence.

Homicide detectives and the coroner’s office have started conducting investigations into the matter.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Long Beach homicide detectives Malcolm Evans and Todd Johnson at (562) 570-7244.
