PERRIS (CBSLA.com) —A Camp Pendleton Marine died in a skydiving training accident Tuesday afternoon near Perris Valley Airport.
Firefighters responded to a report of an injured skydiver close to 2000 Goetz Road around 3 p.m., according to Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Circumstances surrounding the situation remain unclear, but the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the man who died was part of an active military training exercise at Skydive Perris, which is where the Marines regularly practice.
KCAL9’s Stacey Butler said the man’s parachute reportedly didn’t open.
Camp Pendleton officials, who said the incident marks the first time someone on active duty was killed during skydiving training, are handling the investigation.
