At a Thursday afternoon press conference, Sheriff John McMahon identified the deceased as 35-year-old Jeremiah MacKay, the father of two young children.
MacKay was killed Tuesday during a gun battle with a suspect who was holed up in a vacant cabin in the Angelus Oaks area of Big Bear.
Another deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was also injured. That deputy, who underwent surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, has now been identified as Alexander Collins.
Authorities say he will likely need several more operations.
