MENTONE (CBSLA.com) — The death toll from Sunday’s bus accident rose to eight people Wednesday.
Fred Bailey Richardson, the driver of the pickup truck that collided with the bus around 6:30 p.m. Sunday on Highway 38 near Bryant Street, died Wednesday morning, CHP Officer Mario Lopez said.
Seven others were killed in the collision and dozens more were injured.
The bus carrying 38 people had departed Tijuana, Mexico, at 5:00 a.m. for a day of skiing at Big Bear.
A preliminary report from the CHP indicates that the bus went out of control, flipped over and hit the pickup truck that was hauling a trailer.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but speed is being considered a factor.
