Armed Man Escapes After 8-Hour Standoff With SWAT Team

CITY TERRACE (CBSLA.com) — A barricade suspect fled the scene of his East Los Angeles home after an eight-hour standoff with the SWAT Team Wednesday.

The SWAT Team entered and cleared the home in the 1000 block of North Alama Avenue just before 10 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The Sheriff's Department received a call for a barricaded suspect around 1:30 a.m. from the suspect's mother  who stated her son was mentally unstable.

"When the deputies arrived, they made contact with . . . the mother. She informed us that her son fired a weapon," Sgt. Jose Uribe said. "We're trying to make contact with the subject at this time and we're unsuccessful."

Authorities used bullhorns to call him outside, but the suspect refused to comply with deputies. They also tried calling the suspect's cell phone which had been turned off.

A fire broke out on the second floor of the home just before 8:45 a.m. after a tear gas canister was fired into the house by deputies. The fire was extinguished just after 9 a.m.

The SWAT Team entered the home after obtaining a search warrant and found no sign of the suspect.
