Memorial Service Held For Popular OC Lifeguard

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A memorial service is being held Sunday for a popular lifeguard who died after falling from his bike last month.

A service for 38-year-old Brian Gray began at noon on the sands at 17th Street on the Balboa Peninsula.

The Orange County Coroner's office said Gray was declared dead after being taken to Western Medical Center on Dec. 22. The cause of death has not been determined.

Newport Beach Public Information Manager Tara Finnigan says Gray was considered the resident expert on surf forecasting for the beach. He served as a junior lifeguard and became a cadet lifeguard in 1990, graduating to Newport Beach lifeguard the next year.

Gray is survived by his parents, brother, sister-in-law, nieces and a nephew, the Los Angeles Times reported.
