ARCADIA (CBSLA.com) Jockey Rafael Bejarano becomes the fourth jockey since 1991 to win four races at Santa Anita’s opening Day Tuesday, the day after Christmas.
Bejarano’s 4-win day included two stake races. He won the $300,000 La Brea Stakes(Race 4) with Book Review and trainer Bob Baffert, and the $150,000 Sir Beaufort Stakes(Race 5) aboard Silentio with trainer Gary Mandella.
“It’s great to be here on opening day and to win a Grade I, that’s like a Christmas gift to myself,” said Baffert after winning his 7th La Brea Stakes.
Garret Gomez with Jimmy Creed won the 7-Furlong $300,000 Malibu Stakes (Race 8).
The other three jockeys who won four races on opening day are: Gary Stevens(1991), Garret Gomez(2006) and David Flores (2007).
Santa Anita had an attendance of 27,273 people.
