WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said a man has died after being wounded in a deputy-involved shooting in Whittier and his alleged accomplice has been taken into custody.
Ed Mertz, reporting for KNX 1070, says the man and his female companion were traveling in an SUV that authorities stopped for an alleged vehicle violation.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Jim Thornton told Mertz that it was then when "each suspect fired a round it is believed towards Whittier Police Department units." Officers, however, were not struck.
The pair reportedly then took off near Washington and Norwalk boulevards, prompting a massive, seven-hour search that led to the evacuation of nearby homes.
They were eventually located in a garage where the male suspect told authorities that the woman was in fact a hostage. She surrendered to authorities.
It was then that the man, according to Thornton, "was seen with a weapon and then there was a deputy involved shooting and the suspect was hit."
The male suspect has died, deputies report. The woman was subsequently taken into custody and is suspected of being an accomplice.
