Family, Friends Mourn 2 Young Boys Killed In Horrific Santa Fe Springs Crash

SANTA FE SPRINGS (CBSLA.com) — Friends, family and a former teacher all mourned the loss of two young brothers killed Friday night in a horrific crash in Santa Fe Springs.

The crash occurred yesterday evening  in the 12000 block of Los Nietos Road. The crash occurred about 5:45 p.m.

Police are hoping that security store video might provide details to what led to the fatal collision. At least one witness said a vehicle cut off the Honda Civic causing it to crash into a telephone poll.

The driver of the Civic, 33-year-old Valentin Medina, was the father of the two boys. The force of the crash split his Honda in two. Officials described the halves of the car being "a significant distance" apart.

The deceased were identified as 11-year-old Damian Medina and his 13-year-old brother Jonathan Medina, AKA Nathan.

Officials said the boys were killed instantly. Valentin Medina is in serious but stable condition.

Jose Mendoza works across the street from the crash site. He said Valentin could be heard screaming out for his boys. "He was just yelling for his children," said Mendoza.

Another witness told CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Greg Mills, "As soon as I saw the little boy, I had to walk away. I couldn't handle it."

Today, friends and relatives pinned notes and photographs to the telephone pole and placed candles at the base.

Destiny Berrios was Nathan's girlfriend. She said, "He was my everything."

A teacher who taught both boys also stopped by the makeshift memorial. "Just to pay my respects. To know that this was the place where Damian took his last breath..."
