Prop. 30 Likely To Eliminate LAUSD Furlough Days

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A possible funding cut of $255 million to the Los Angeles Unified school district is no longer on the table after voters passed Proposition 30.

KNX 1070′s Bill Polish reports Superintendent John Deasy will ask the Board of Education on Tuesday to restore the district’s school year and scale back furlough days.

Deasy is expected to call for the school board to rescind 10 furlough days and restore the full academic school year of 180 days.

Prop. 30 – which calls for a half-cent sales tax increase and higher income taxes on California’s wealthiest residents – is expected to generate a $6 billion windfall in state tax revenues over the next five years.

Board president Monica Garcia said the decision expected at Tuesday’s board meeting will only cover the current school year, but she remains optimistic that there will be a similar deal in place next year as well.

“There is not a guarantee, but we have heard loud and clear, people do not want to see more cuts,” she said.

If board members approve Deasy’s request, it would mark the first full academic school year since 2008.
