LA Deputies Fatally Shoot Fleeing Suspect

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives are investigating the death of a man killed by a deputy when he tried to run away from a car that had been pulled over for traffic violations.

A statement from the sheriff's department says the incident occurred Saturday around 10:20 p.m. in an area south of downtown Los Angeles.

Deputies were trying to get the car to pull over when the driver sped away but stopped a short while later. The suspect in the passenger seat exited the car and raised his arm from his waistband. Fearing he was drawing a gun, two deputies fired at him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver then fled. He later crashed his car and ran away on foot. He was subsequently arrested without incident.
