SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — A Sylmar man who allegedly set his 59-year-old mother on fire, which resulted in her death, is expected to be in court this month on murder and other charges.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. Aug. 25 on the 12000 block of Via Marta.
Police and firefighters found Heunae Chang with severe burns. She died later at the hospital.
Phillip Chang, 25, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, torture and aggravated mayhem, according to Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney.
Carney said the attempted murder charge will change to murder.
Chang is in jail on $1 million bail.
He’s expected to be in court Sept. 24.
