HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — The sole beach in Orange County where dogs can run free is going bankrupt.
The non-profit that runs Huntington Dog Beach, the Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, is nearly out of money to continue funding the beach.
It needs funding to keep the area, which stretches from Goldenwest Street to Seapoint Street, clean and provide doggie bags.
The beach will be turned over to the city unless the cash comes through.
Dog owners are disappointed by the possible closure.
“It’s one of the last few places you can go and the dogs look forward to it every week,” said a beachgoer.
“It’s like Disneyland for our dogs; it’s so fun. It’d be really sad,” said one woman.
The beach has been recognized nationally for its dog friendly sand.
An estimated 2 million canines run free there every year.
