COMPTON (CBS) — Sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded a man Sunday afternoon in Compton.
The deputy-involved shooting was reported at 12:42 p.m. at the Compton Fashion Center at Bullis Road and Orchard Avenue, said Deputy Mark Pope of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital, Pope said.
Unconfirmed reports say the suspect was a male Latino adult. Sunday night, authorities said the suspect was in critical condition.
Officials say they tried to talk to the suspect when he started running away. They also say he pulled a gun and began firing back at officers as well as a private security guard who had joined in the chase.
At this point, officials say a sheriff’s deputy and the security guard returned fire hitting the suspect. There was no word on how many times the suspect was shot.
No deputies were injured in the shooting.
