RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Firefighters on Sunday were gaining ground on a stubborn brush fire that has scorched about 2,198 acres in Riverside.
The Highland fire was burning in a remote area south of Beaumont near Potrero Road. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, the fire was 60 percent contained. Officials believe the fire will be fully contained by midnight.
Authorities say the blaze, which broke out in steep and rugged terrain just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday, has not threatened any homes. Nearby residents, however, had been told to be ready for evacuations.
It’s still unclear what caused the fire.
No injuries have been reported.
