Engineer Hospitalized Following Freight Train Derailment Downtown

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles fire department says three railroad freight cars derailed near downtown Los Angeles and the engineer was hospitalized with neck pain.

Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says the derailment was reported at 1:45 a.m. after a 53-car train struck some parked rail cars in a railroad yard on Lamar Street.

He didn't say how fast the train was moving, but the three cars remained upright after they went off the track.

He says that there were no other problems associated with the derailment.

There was no further word on the condition of the engineers.
