Irvine Named 'America's Safest City' For 8th Consecutive Year

IRVINE (CBS) — Irvine has been named "America's Safest City" by the Federal Bureau of Investigations for the eight consecutive year, officials announced Monday.

The Orange County city has the lowest violent crime rate with populations of more than 100,000 residents, the FBI said.

"This is history-making", said Mayor Sukhee Kang. "Eight straight years as the country's Safest City is truly something to celebrate. It is the culmination of City Council initiative, our Public Safety Department's efforts, and our caring citizens. This kind of track record may sound redundant, but public safety is a commitment we do not take lightly. The well-being of our community is the cornerstone of our success."

The FBI measures murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, auto theft and arson in their annual report.

Irvine's violent crime rate reported in both 2010 and 2011 was the lowest in the city's history.
