Jacob, Sophia Americans' Favorite Baby Names In 2011

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Jacob remained the top name for new baby boys in 2011, while Sophia took the top spot from Isabella for girls, according to the 2011 baby name rankings released Monday by the Social Security Administration.

Jacob has been the favorite name for baby boys in America since 2000, when it replaced Michael, which is now in the No. 6 spot. As for girls, Sophia has been steadily gaining in popularity since 2006, when it broke the Top 10. Isabella, which was the most popular name for girls in 2009 and 2010, was also the second-most common name for baby girls in 2007 and 2008.

For boys, the next most popular names were Mason, William, Jayden, Noah, Michael, Ethan, Alexander, Aiden and Daniel in 2011. For girls, those names were Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Ava, Emily, Abigail, Madison, Mia and Chloe.

Californians generally mirrored the national trends, favoring Jacob and Isabella in 2010, the most recent year available for state data.
