Local Families Mourn BU Students Killed In New Zealand Crash

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS) — The parents of a Boston University student killed in a collision in New Zealand were grieving Sunday, along with the families of two other BU students, one of whom had lived in Woodland Hills.

Austin Brashears, 21, of Huntington Beach; Roch Jauberty, 21, formerly of Woodland Hills; and Daniela Lekhno, 20, of Manalapan, N.J. were killed Saturday in a collision while en route to a popular destination where the “Lord of the Rings” movies were filmed.

The students were visiting New Zealand as part of an exchange program and were traveling in a convoy of vehicles when one of the drivers lost control and crashed.

The accident happened Saturday at about 7:30 a.m. New Zealand time, KNX 1070’s Vytas Safroncikas reported.

Jauberty’s parents now live in Paris. He identified himself on Facebook as a former Woodland Hills resident.
