BURBANK (CBS) — Burbank police Saturday continued to search for a missing FBI Special Agent who was last seen by family members on Thursday evening.

Relatives of 35-year-old Stephen Ivens told authorities that they last saw him at his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road.

In a news release issued by Burbank police, authorities say that Ivens, who is distraught, may be suicidal. His wife told officers she saw her husband last when she went to bed Thursday night.

Further investigation revealed that Ivens’ service gun was missing from his residence, KNX 1070’s Margret Carrero reported.

Bloodhounds reportedly tracked him in the area of the Verdugo Mountains, according to police.

Ivens, a white male, is 6’0″, weighs approximately 160 pounds and wears prescription glasses. He is described as having brown hair with a receding hair line and brown eyes.

Edward Lawrence, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said more than 50 officers, agents and deputies were searching for Ivens.

At nightfall the search continued by air. Sheriff’s deputies in helicopters, wearing night-vision goggles, kept the search going.

Capt. Mike Parker, of the LA’s Sheriff’s department, said “An area that has really rough terrain we would probably save that for daylight.. And then the areas that are easier to cover that grid we would focus more. We have to be concerned about the rescuers safety.”

Burbank Police Captain Dennis Cremins told Lawrence, “There is no evidence of foul play right now. But that is why we still have a robust effort to locate him.”

Lawrence also spoke to Steven Gomez, described as Special Agent in Charge. Ivens’ actual work with the FBI is somewhat classified. “He worked in national security type cases. Counter-terrorism. That’s all I can really say about his casework.”

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to contain the Burbank Police Department at (818) 238-3000 or Laura Eimiller of the FBI Media Relations at (310) 420-6441.
