Girl, 3, Recovers From Dog Mauling In Victorville

VICTORVILLE (CBS) — The 3-year-old girl who was attacked by a neighbor's dog on Easter Sunday is home recovering in Victorville.

Hayleh Harger was at her home when a neighbor brought the dog to the Harger backyard.

Hayleh's father says the neighbor abandoned the dog -- a Rottweiler mix -- after the neighbor allegedly got into an argument with his roommate.

Jeff Nguyen, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, says they haven't seen the neighbor since Monday. Says Mark Harger, "I'm not too happy with him. He never came by. He never said, 'I'm sorry.'"

The girl had reportedly stepped out of her playhouse and into the backyard when the dog --  who was tied to a tree -- attacked.

Harger's mother Debra Jimenez told authorities that when she went outside she found the dog standing on top of the girl as she laid face-down on the ground. Her mother was able to scare the dog off and call 911. "He was over her, completely over her and her head was in his mouth."

Officials received a call from the home shortly after 2 p.m. in the 14900 block of Joshua Street.

Harger reportedly received cuts to her face which required 100 stitches.

The girl is expected to recover, though her mother says she will likely need plastic surgery and some skin grafts to repair her wounds.

The dog is currently under a 10-day quarantine at a county shelter. Jimenez believes the dog needs to be put down. "He could do it to somebody else's kid. And the next kid might not be so lucky."
