NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — Irvine police say a doctor allegedly wrote prescriptions for amphetamines and other pills for a girlfriend and an ex-girlfriend with the intention of using the drugs himself.

Lt. Julia Engen said Friday that 42-year-old Brian Michael Swan is charged with 24 felonies, including obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

Engen says Swan and his girlfriend broke up, and in the months that followed he allegedly wrote 22 prescriptions for her without her knowledge.

The plan worked until the victim’s insurance denied the prescription at the pharmacy. When the pharmacist contacted the victim, she had no knowledge of the prescriptions.

Irvine police investigated and learned of a second victim.

Swan faces a maximum sentence of 11 years and eight months in state prison if convicted of all counts.

So if he is indeed found Guilty, Swan, MD will join the ranks of other disgraced doctors whose files are held in semi-secrecy at the Nat’l Practitioner Data Bank.

It isn’t exactly a small fraternity: the jaw-dropping numbers of “Dangerous” or “Questionable” MDs have swollen to well over 250,000. You may want to go back and take another peel at all those zeros.

And, you may want to pick up a copy of “America’s Dumbest Doctors.”

    It could save your life.

Hey patricparamedic – thats funny coming from a wannna be doctor. Don’t they teach you anything about drug dependence and addiction in paramedic school? And I am sure that there are no paramedics out there with drug problems, huh? Just keep living by your creed: ignorance is bliss…

Please try to grow a part that thinks. I realize logic doesn’t come in a bottle; that you actually have to develop the skill of applied common sense.

You can start by acknowledging that I graduated from UCSD school of medicine in La Jolla. If I’d wanted to be an MD would be.

And I am well aware that this may well be a giant mental leap for you, but smart people don’t justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior.

Get a grip, moron. How much do you know about YOUR doctor?
