Driver In Van Nuys Fatal Hit-And-Run Surrenders To Police

VAN NUYS (CBS) — Police say a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a male pedestrian in Van Nuys surrendered to authorities hours later.

The accident at Victory Boulevard and Kester Avenue occurred about 2:30 a.m., Sgt. Cameron Dunnet of the Valley Traffic Division said.

"The victim, a man who was between 50- and 60-years-old, was crossing Victory when he was struck by a dark-colored sedan that was heading eastbound," Dunnet said. "The victim was pronounced dead at the scene."

The victim's name was unavailable early today.

"Pieces of the car were left behind at the intersection," Dunnet said.

The driver turned himself in at the LAPD's West Valley station about two hours after the accident, Dunnet said.

The suspect likely will be booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and possibly manslaughter.

"We also don't yet know whether drugs or alcohol was involved in the accident," Dunnet said.

Traffic investigators said they will try to come up with video of the accident by checking nearby businesses.
