Police Say Woman Racing Car Fatally Strikes Another Driver

SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — Police say Baseline Street is a popular roadway for street racing.

It's where a woman was reportedly racing her car Thursday night and drove head-on into another driver, a young woman who was killed upon impact, San Bernardino police said.

Three cars were reportedly racing eastbound on East Baseline Street. Cecelia Sorto, 25, was driving one of the cars when her vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, hitting 26-year-old Nuvia Rivera head on. Rivera died from her injuries.

"It appears that there were signs of ...alcohol intoxication," said Lt. Paul Williams, who said they were waiting on blood test results to verify that. Those results will determine whether the other two drivers will be arrested.

Williams said Sorto was drinking, speeding and driving with her 3-year-old child in the car. That child has been released from the hospital.

Police say Sorto talks about street racing on her Facebook page.

"Street racing is for the track," said Williams. "It is not for the city streets where the citizens -- your family -- drives on."

Sorto remains hospitalized Friday in critical condition.

She faces charges of felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter and felony child endangerment.
