LMU Goes Down In WCC Quarterfinals To San Francisco

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Michael Williams scored 19 points, Cody Doolin scored 16 and San Francisco beat Loyola Marymount 67-60 in the West Coast Conference tournament quarterfinals Friday night.

No. 5 seed San Francisco (20-12), which beat Portland on Wednesday, next gets WCC No. 1 seed Saint Mary's (25-5) in Saturday's opening semifinal.

The Dons took the lead for good at 47-46 on a layup by Cole Dickerson with 11:26 left. Williams followed with a pair of 3-pointers to help San Francisco stay in front.

"(Dickerson) really gives us something off the bench; he's kind of a sixth starter for us," San Francisco coach Rex Walters said. "He's got a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

"We wanted him in at the end because we know he's going to get rebounds for us."

Two free throws by Anthony Ireland and a 3-pointer by Jarrod DuBois brought the fourth-seeded Lions within 61-58 with 1:39 left, but they came no closer.

Ashley Hamilton had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Ireland finished with 13 points for Loyola Marymount. The Lions posted their highest victory total since the 1989-90 team won 26 and reached the NCAA tournament regional finals.

"They did what they needed to do and my hat's off to them," Loyola Marymount coach Max Good said of the Dons. "They outrebounded us (39-36). We held our own in the first half on the boards, but in the second half they outrebounded us."

San Francisco was able to convert 11 3-pointers, with Williams making five and Dickerson, Doolin and Angelo Caloiaro.

"They get you in a scatter game. They press and hit you from different angles," Good said. "I'd like to play that way too, but we don't have the guard depth at this point."
