PERRIS (CBS) — San Bernardino County Fire Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Horton’s commute to work began like most do, but it ended with a newborn baby.
San Bernardino County Fire spokeswoman Tracey Martinez says Horton was in his County Fire vehicle when a frantic man in a black sport utility vehicle mouthing “Baby! Baby! Baby!” flagged him down. Horton used his PA system to direct the man off the freeway.
Once they stopped, the man jumped from his SUV, yelling “Help me! Help me! My wife’s having the baby now!”
Horton called 911 and prepped the mother for the birth of her baby, who was already crowning. Before Riverside County Fire and an ambulance could arrive, Horton had already delivered the healthy baby boy, who the appreciative parents named after Horton — Levi Michael.
“It all happened so fast,” Horton said in a statement. “I’m just glad I was in the right place at the right time. It was an awesome blessing and experience.
