Car Sharing Service Expands To West Hollywood

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — A shared vehicle program, already successful on the east coast, is set to launch in West Hollywood, it was announced Wednesday.

Zipcar, Inc. will station 10 vehicles in reserved parking spots at five locations throughout the city.
Local residents, visitors, and those working in West Hollywood will have access to use the cars after arriving on foot or by public transportation.

"West Hollywood is a city that has been at the forefront of innovation when it comes to urban planning and citizen/resident services," said Mayor John Duran. "Zipcar is one of those initiatives that fit right into West Hollywood's approach to smart urban planning and living."

Gas, reserved parking spots, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles per day are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for several days.

Rentals begin at $8 per hour after a $60 annual fee.

Zipcar vehicles will be located in pods of two on Fountain Avenue near Vista Street; Orlando Avenue near Santa Monica Boulevard; as well as locations on Poinsettia Place, Orange Grove Avenue and Hancock Avenue.

Dan Grossman, Zipcar's regional vice president, West Coast, said the expansion into West Hollywood "comes as a result of strong member demand in the greater Los Angeles area."

Zipcar has about 673,000 members and 8,900 vehicles in urban areas and college campuses throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
