La Cañada School Board Votes To Dismiss Teacher Who Used Ethnic Slur In Class

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE (CBS) — The La Cañada Unified school board voted unanimously Tuesday to begin dismissal proceedings against a high school math teacher, following complaints that she made derogatory ethnic slurs in her classroom.

Complaints reportedly were filed against Gabrielle Leko, claiming she mocked a special education student's speech impediment and called another student "Jew Boy."

President Scott Tracy said that the dismissal proceedings wil go into effect Feb. 27, according to a report in the La Cañada Flintride Patch.

On Dec. 26, the board met for a special closed-door session and recommended the district counsel reach a settlement with Leko that could lead to her leaving the school district.

They also decided to give students the option to leave her class. District Supt. Wendy Sinnette reportedly said 15 students in her pre-calculus class and two in her AP Calculus class chose to leave.
