LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Jessie Rees, whose wish was to spread joy and encourage kids battling cancer to “Never Ever Give Up” (NEGU), lost her own fight with the disease Thursday. She was 12 years old.

On March 3, 2011, Jessie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, but she did not let her illness get her down.

Instead she brought happiness and hope to other children with her JoyJars. She filled the jars with little gifts to brighten up their stay in the hospital.

She also sold her jars online along with a NEGU bracelet and JoyJars t-shirts.

Jessie’s vision quickly spread with tens of thousands of followers on Facebook and inspired the creation of The NEGU Foundation.

Jessie’s memory and spirit will continue to live on through the thousands of people she touched and the foundation that she inspired.
