(CBS) – Arizona State MLB Vontaze Burfict announced on his facebook page that he will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL draft.
Burfict is projected to be a first round pick, despite a junior season in which he was demoted to second string for the Maaco Las Vegas bowl.
Burfict was selected as a preseason All-American, but failed to receive any consideration for the all Pac-12 team.
The 21-year-old played his high school football at Corona Centennial, where he started with fellow Sun Devils Shelly Lyons and Brandon Magee for Centennial.
The deadline for underclassmen to declare is January 15th.
