Man And Woman Dead, 3 Children Hurt In Rollover Crash

SANTA ANA (CBS) — A male driver and a female passenger are dead, and three children injured in a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in Santa Ana.

The white sedan reportedly hit a power pole before overturning.

The man was declared dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a trauma center with critical injuries. She is also now declared dead, according to Santa Ana police.

A 2-year-old girl is in critical condition. A 6-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl are both listed in stable condition, say the police.

It is also unclear what relation the man had to the woman and the children. Both of the victims were described as Hispanic. Police said the woman was the mother to the three children.

Reporting from the scene, Rachel Kim said there were a downed power line and that as many as 1500 people in the area were without power.

Kim spoke to Cpl. Anthony Bertagna who told her witnesses said the car was doing between 60-80 mph when it swerved to avoid a car making a left turn.

He told her the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle before slamming into the power pole. The car ended up upside down in someone's yard.

He said the car crashed into the curb after swerving, then hit the pole before flipping over.

It is not known if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

Bartagna also told Kim the group was reportedly headed to a church service.

The accident occurred just after 7 p.m. on the 2000 block of 5th Street near English.
