Passersby Rescue Driver From Fiery Crash On 101 Freeway

CALABASAS (CBS) — Passersby came to the rescue of a driver who was trapped inside a truck following a fiery crash in Calabasas.

The accident on the eastbound Ventura (101) Freeway at Las Virgenes Road was reported about 6:33 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

According to California Highway Patrol officer Ed Jacobs, the vehicle (possibly a rental car) crashed into an overpass and caught fire.

Arriving CHP officers reported that motorists had stopped and were kicking in windows to rescue at least one person inside the burning truck.

It was not immediately known if the injured motorist was treated at the scene or taken to a hospital, Jacobs said.

Officers with the CHP reported fuel spilling onto the middle lanes of the four lane freeway left just one lane open for traffic.

Caltrans engineers were called to the scene to see if the overpass columns were damaged by the crash.
