Man Pushing Wheelchair Hit And Killed In Costa Mesa

COSTA MESA (CBS) — A 40 year-old man pushing an empty wheelchair across the street outside the crosswalk was fatally struck by a motorist in Costa Mesa Friday, a police lieutenant said.

Gary De La Rosa was struck about 5 a.m. in the 2000 block of Harbor Boulevard by a gray 2004 Jaguar X-J8 driven southbound by a 49-year-old woman.

De La Rosa was walking across Harbor Boulevard, south of Bay Street, said Costa Mesa police Lt. Bryan Glass.

De La Rosa was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorist was questioned by police. It was not immediately known if she was cited.

Costa Mesa Police Department traffic investigators asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (714) 754-5264.

    That area is notorius for having people pushing empty wheelchairs, but to my knowledge, this is the first time anyone has been killed. It should be designated as a “no empty wheelchair area”.
