Crews Blow Up Hydrogen Tanks At Sylmar Energy Plant

SYLMAR (CBS) — Crews Sunday conducted a second explosion at an alternative energy plant in Sylmar after the first failed to permeate all three tanks full of compressed hydrogen.

The second explosion, which occurred about 9 a.m., appeared to have been successful, according to authorities.

The first attempt at Rainbow of Hope near Gladstone and Arroyo avenues occurred about 7:45 a.m. and prompted the closure of 210 Freeway between Maclay Avenue and the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway. That portion of the freeway has since been reopened.

The planned explosion follows two accidental blasts at plants operated by an alternative energy company.

One blast in August left two people critically injured. Another explosion at the company's Simi Valley warehouse in 2010 killed the owner's brother.

State and federal investigators are looking into the cause of those two explosions.
