911 Tape Reveals Frantic Moments After Seal Beach ‘2-Minute Massacre’
SEAL BEACH (CBS) — The tight-knit community of Seal Beach continues to come together in the wake of a deadly rampage at a salon this week.
Seconds before the massacre unfolded Wednesday afternoon, the owners of Salon Meritage were busy with a full house of clients, about 15 inside. On Friday, we obtained tape from one of the 911 calls made minutes after a shooting, which captured the chaos:
Caller: Hey we got some shootings over here in Seal Beach.
Operator: Ok, where?
Caller: The Salon Meritage on PCH and 5th street, we need an ambulance.
Operator: PCH and 5th, who’s shot?
Caller: Uh, some people in the uh, in the salon here.
CBS2’s Suraya Fadel reported that the deadly rampage started at 1:20 p.m. It began when the D.A. says 41-year-old Scott Dekraai walked into the salon wearing a bullet proof vest armed with three handguns – a 9mm pistol, a .44 magnum and a .45 caliber pistol.
The intent — according to the D.A. — to murder his ex-wife Michelle Fournier and any other people, who may have been present.
“He walked through the salon shooting anyone close enough to hit,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said, calling the incident a “two-minute massacre.”
By 1:21 p.m., the D.A. says Dekraai walked through the salon methodically, executing employees and customers.
The victims, including 48-year-old Fournier, were shot up close repeatedly.
Other victims include salon owner Randy Lee Fannin, 62, of Murrieta; Christy Lynn Wilson, 47, of Cerritos; Michelle Daschbach Fast, 47, Seal Beach; Victoria Ann Buzzo, 54, Laguna Beach; Lucia Bernice Kondas, 65, Huntington Beach; Laura Lee Elody, 46, Huntington Beach and David Caouette, 64, Seal Beach.
Hattie Stretz, mother of Laura Lee Elody, is the sole survivor of Wednesday’s shooting.
The niece of Fannin told us her uncle confronted Dekraai before he was gunned down.
“Asking him to stop and to think of a different way and they could talk about this and find a different way to do this and obviously Scott was not in a place to hear anything,” Tami Scarcella said.
Dekraai allegedly stopped to reload when his ammunition ran out. He then continued firing as people lay dying, according to authorities.
“Dekraai shot victim after victim, executing people by shooting them in the head and chest,” Rackauckas said.
According to the D.A., Dekraai walked out of the salon and allegedly executed the driver of a Range Rover parked next to him.
In the final moments of the 911 call, chaos can be heard in the background as police and fire responded. By 1:22 p.m., the rampage was over.
According to Rackauckas, Dekraai had argued with his ex-wife about custody of their 8-year-old son before the rampage unfolded.
