LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070) — In an effort to collect unpaid tickets, the state will offer a half-off discount on most traffic citations.
Officials estimated about one million unpaid traffic tickets just in Los Angeles County will benefit from the traffic ticket amnesty program, which goes into effect on Jan. 1.
KNX 1070’s Ed Mertz reports that there are limitations, however; starting with parking tickets, which won’t be eligible for the discount.
Also, the tickets had to have been due by Jan. 1, 2009.
Those ticketed for moving violations will be eligible for the discount as long as they don’t owe restitution or have outstanding warrants.
Meantime, state officials say they have no idea how much money they’ll collect. A similar program in 2004 helped California raise 1.3 billion dollars in unpaid tickets.
