State To Offer Half-Off Discount On Most Traffic Citations

LOS ANGELES (KNX 1070) — In an effort to collect unpaid tickets, the state will offer a half-off discount on most traffic citations.

Officials estimated about one million unpaid traffic tickets just in Los Angeles County will benefit from the traffic ticket amnesty program, which goes into effect on Jan. 1.

KNX 1070’s Ed Mertz reports that there are limitations, however; starting with parking tickets, which won’t be eligible for the discount.

Also, the tickets had to have been due by Jan. 1, 2009.

Those ticketed for moving violations will be eligible for the discount as long as they don’t owe restitution or have outstanding warrants.

Meantime, state officials say they have no idea how much money they’ll collect. A similar program in 2004 helped California raise 1.3 billion dollars in unpaid tickets.

That seems like a bad idea. The DMV checks for unpaid tickets when you renew your vehicle’s registration renewal, so there shouldn’t be anyone with a currently registration who hasn’t paid a ticket.

The people that are not paying tickets and not renewing their registration aren’t going to be swayed by the 50% off deal.

The DMV does allow people to renew their car registration with unpaid moving violations on file. It’s unpaid PARKING violations that block the renewal of registration NOT moving violations. Someone can have 20 unpaid speeding tickets and still renew their car registration.

The Dream Act and all other illegal alien services are going to be funded by US citizens wether you like it or not. Your just mad at the fact that you do not have the power to change any of this…lol…sour grapes🙂 Welcome to California.

If we refuse to pay proerty taxes, refuse to file federal/state income taxes where will the money come from?Maybe la Raza

      2. Erin says:

On the planet we live on (Earth) most people are not going to refuse to pay taxes because they know that their pay checks and any assets/property they have will be either garnished or have liens placed on them. So, try again.

A million tickets and over a billion dollars made, that’s over $1,000/ticket. The State can f**k off.

Why pay now if youi got away with it already. Bring your illegal kids and pregnant wives. Let the legal lay abiding people pay for it all your votes have been won buy non law abiding citizens. I guess no break for those who follow the law and rules, sound familiar. Another free bail out paid by those who work legally.

  7. I have a pawn shop which opened in November of 2010. For the purpose of my 1040, Schedule C how do I classify it in the Part B? There are no references to a pawn shop in the classifications at the end of the Instructions for a Schedule C.

Where the city went wrong was in the beginning when they should have let people know if they don’t pay their traffic fines that a warrant would be issued for their arrest just like other cities and states do. If they also would not let people that have outstanding traffic fines that they can not renew their drivers license unless they pay their fines. Common Sense Is Not That Common.
