Woman Killed After Tree Falls Onto Car In Costa Mesa

COSTA MESA (CBS) — One person is dead after a large eucalyptus tree fell onto a car near the Costa Mesa-Newport Beach border, officials said.

The tree fell around 2 p.m. Thursday, crushing the car. Officials said the female driver was alive initially, but later died.

The tree blocked both north and southbound lanes of Irvine Avenue, near Westcliff Drive.

Firefighters were attempting to lift the tree off of the blue 2002 Huyndai, but stopped around 3 p.m. and placed a white sheet over the vehicle's windshield.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Officials say there will be an investigation into the incident's emergency response procedures.
