SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — Authorities are searching for the shooter who killed a 3-year-old girl and critically injured two other people as they sat on their front porch in San Bernardino.

The shooting took place around 8 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of D Street.

Police said the survivors, a different 3-year-old girl and her pregnant mother, are in critical but stable condition. They are expected to survive.

The shooter was reportedly arguing with the mother when a passerby intervened, and the gunman turned on him. He instead shot and killed a little girl and two of her relatives.

“I just know the family was crying, “Marie Ortiz told CBS2. “The mom was crying; the grandma was crying. I had to pray for her, pick her up and say to her, ‘Everything’s going to be OK.’ She was three years old and the mom was just in shock.”

Authorities only have a vague description of the shooter, who they say walked up to the home and opened fire on the victims.

Several people who were home at the time were taken to a police station for questioning.

The suspect reportedly came to the house looking for another man inside.

Earlier in the day, that man had intervened in a fight the gunman was having with another woman. Police say that the suspect was physically assaulting that woman. They’re hoping that woman comes forward to offer information on the suspect.

i hope the police will find the gunman and lock ’em up and throw away the keys.

    1. DH says:

The gunman had best hope the police find him before the victim’s family does.

Killing is wrong but killing babies is VERY wrong.

SaN Bernardino 29 years ago was a good ol boy country redneck town, now a total ghetto.

its quite clear it was GANG realted maybe the woman was not in a gang but the shooter likely was this may well have been some test for some moron to get into a gang

      Don’t be naive.

Whole family, all involved and or has affiliations. Probably one thug confronting another, its a sub-culture and their cultural values basically involve living by the sword…

You have no evidence of a test. Stop assuming things based on your knowledge of the streets through TV, movies and gang stories.

Is this story badly written or did I come down with dyslexia just now? It is hard to follow who is who. Are “the passerby”, “the gunman” “that man,” “that woman,” the person who was in the argument and the person who walked up and opened fire all different people? Who does “they’re” refer to? The police?

    1. rich says:

PASSER BY is a man that tried to help the shooting victims
THAT MAN is someone who lives in the same house as the victims but was not home at the time of the shooting
THAT WOMAN is the person the SHOOTER fought with early in the day and who THAT MAN stoped the fight
the PERSON WHO OPENED FIRE is the same as THE SHOOTER
      THEY’RE refers to the police
so there was 2 women who the shooter fought with he shot the second one
its the FIRST ONE that THEY’RE (POLICE) hopes will come forward
there was 2 men that INTERVENED one being who ever lived in the house where the shooting happend and the 2nd being PASSER BY

I was thinking the same exact thing ,bub.

  6. Robert says:

I agree with bub–I have absolutely no idea what the writer is talking about.

  7. Lester says:

We are always quick to comment and condemn other countries for violence committed by thugs, drug dealers and criminals.
We should clean up our own backyard in The United States First before we contoniue to talk about other countries.
If people in the U.S. actually picked up books other than teen magazine and playboy and entertainment they might read that the U.S. has one of the highest murder rates in the world!
Thousands of people in the U.S. are daily victims of gun crimes, rape and other violent crimes.
I hope some people begin to take notice!

    1. impossible ...Dreamer says:

These are cultural problems. Their main culture nurtures thugs and criminality, gangs, which are sub cultures. Grandma making taco’s… what a healthy dinner by the way, and she’s surprised at what the sub-culture attracted?

You know, its almost impossible to change cultures. This isn’t just a US crime problem, the solution is in the problem. But those inside that culture are truly the only ones that can change it. Not the US or people reading teen mags or Playboys…

  8. wobbles says:

Where’s the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons to raise up the people in righteous indignation over the murder of a child? MIA— because the shooter is black and the victim is not……

    1. Moogs says:

IF in fact the shooter was black… then it exposes a very bad under the radar problem as Mexicans and African AMERICANS fight for resources, some marginalizing others. IN NO WAY is that a justification to kill a child. But its just an indication of a much broader very bad clash thats just getting out of hand and destroying too many. Azusa comes to mind.

  9. bub says:

Thanks, rich. On re-reading the story with your cheat-sheet in hand I think you are right.

  10. Pat Robertson says:

    thin the herd

Mexicans and African americans are at war, all over SAN Bernardino.

  12. Cora Mason Atkinson says:

I pray the woman comes foward to help the police since it is her incident that caused this maniac to take it out on innocent people. He needs to ask God for forgivness and turn yourself in. This is what happens when we let our anger control us, nothing good becomes of it when we let the devil have our mind this is the result. My prayers go out to those children and mother. This is the reason alot of people don’t get involved because of crazy ass retalliation.
