Police: Woman’s Home Had 2,000 Stolen Library Books ‘Everywhere’

OCEANSIDE (CBS) — Police say a Southland woman suspected of stealing thousands of public library books and DVDs was likely going to hold a book sale of her own.

KNX 1070’s Tom Reopelle reports the investigation began when staff at a Carlsbad library noticed a significant loss of books between March and July coupled with suspicious activity by a frequent patron.

Authorities searched the Vista home of Maria Natar, 44, and found an estimated 2,000 books from Carlsbad and San Diego County libraries — most of which were about cooking, crafts, and animals.

“They were just everywhere, on shelves, in bins, stacks on the floor, just pretty much everywhere,” said police spokeswoman Jodee Sasway.

The arrest came after Natar made a recent stop at the library to pick up some books.

“When she exited the library, the sensors went off, alerting the library people that not all the books were checked out,” said Sasway.

Investigators believe Natar planned on eventually selling the items for cash. Police estimate the value of the missing books to be at least $5,000 or more.

She was booked into the Vista jail on stolen property charges.

This person should be executed! It’s bad enough library budgets are as low as they are, but to steal books when you can borrow them for free is ridiculous. She’s denying everyone also a chance to read the book.

    • LOLatOside

i thought the residents of oceanside burned books? She was saving them from the red neck ex-marine losers.

      • Rush

You mean the ones who risked their lives so that you can enjoy the freedom to be a**hole?

Go back to your bong, smelly hippie…

      • teaj

I immediately thought to myself. hispanic or black. maria. case closed.

    • juan valdez

Library budgets are probably low due to the $17/hr starting wage…to scan books!

Go back to Mexico you stinking bottom feeder.

    • Richard Henkle

really? executed? for denying someone else the chance to read a book? over-react much? I think Dacey has a much better solution, we should just throw all the books at her. Punishment would fit the crime.

      • WangDango

obviously this second post by “richard henkle blows” has not used the internet enough to realize that one has no idea what is implied in a post if there is not a blatant explanation. You both just assumed, except the second is a bier ass.. Are you really so stupid to assume you just know what someone is trying to say when it is not obvious at all? How do you know he did not literally mean execute? You don’t, so you look petty stupid acting like you do.

      • the real TT

@ Richard – no – dont throw the books at her – make her go out to the national forest where all that mess from labor day is and pick up dirty diapers and the trash that is littering our natural environment – and use her special “picking things up technique” put it to good use…….that punishment fit right in with the crime….

      • Richard Henkle Blows

Are you really so stupid that you thought they literally meant “executed”? I think Richard Henkle should be executed for a lack of humour.

  • lala63

What a LOSER. Charge her for every single one of those books.

  • John Dacey

One of my pet peeves, inconsiderate and selfish, not to mention larcenous. I hope they throw the book at her!

  • nomechifles

My library’s alarm goes off even if I have checked out the books I am borrowing. I think the people in charge of maintaining the alarm system must be questioned, as well as the employees at the check-out desk. And if after a day after the return day, I get a call or email regarding the book or books I should have returned or renewed.
    Just some food for thought.

    • smitty77

You are right! What took them so long to miss the books? Was their collusion within the library?

      • AC

She was sneaking books out w/o actually them out. IF she was returning the ones she had checked out then checking more out, there would’ve been no reason to suspect her. She was doing so to enable her to steal books.

  • kim

The cops are going to throw the book at her!

  • saz

I still have a book I checked out in 1968. It was an accident then; now I think it’s just cool.

    • Ghetto Police

That would make you a LOW LIFE

    • stumpypeeps

Ive been going to the library each and every week for over 43 years looking for that book you took only to hear “sorry. somebody still has it”. You should be executed.

  • Joe Blow

Make her write on a blackboard 2000 times I am not going to steal any more

    • bookherdano

Have her copy every book by hand onto blank paper ….. and let her keep the copies.

      • stumpypeeps

        I’d like a copy.

  • Thad Gurkin

This is a sad chapter in her life.

B), you mean this book? http://www.amazon.com/America-Deceived-II-Possession-interrogation/dp/1450257437

Aww, whaddya know, not the last link…

    • Sneaker

I don’t think anyone would steal that book, let alone be able to sell it. After all, the author who wrote America Deceived has to spam just about every thread and forum out there in order to advertise his book.

2000 books valued at 5000. Hello.

    • Dave

Yes. It is well known that books are only worth $2.50 apiece.

or more! Left out something? READ!

My wife works for a county library and they regularly lose massive amounts of materials to theft. The library allows it, because 1) they want to spend every penny of their allotted budget so they can ask for more next year, and 2) they’re afraid of being called “racist” if they dare to question a patron about theft.

    • teaj

so basically all of the thieves are black or hispanic is what you are saying.

    • Tom

If that is what your wife thinks, she has no idea what goes on at the county library or why. She should quit immediately.

    A patron named Maria Natar,
Took pilfering one step too far.
    “Just borrowing,” she said.
But the cop shook his head,
