Trial Scheduled For Man Accused Of Fatally Shooting Ex-Girlfriend's Pit Bull

INDIO (CBS) — Trial is scheduled to begin Thursday for a man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's pit bull.

Raymond Alfred Espinoza, 35, allegedly entered Joyce Brightwell's Marguerite Street residence in Palm Springs on May 16 and shot the dog several times. The canine was dead on the kitchen floor when officers arrived, said Palm Springs police Sgt. Paul Abshire. It was unclear whether Brightwell was home at the time.

Espinoza, who has two prior felony convictions, is charged with animal cruelty, assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm and shooting at a dwelling.

He's being held in lieu of $35,000 bail at Riverside County Jail in Indio.
