WTC Steel Beam Arrives In Beverly Hills For 9/11 Memorial Site
BEVERLY HILLS (CBS) — A twisted piece of structural steel from one of the World Trade Center towers that collapsed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks arrived at a Beverly Hills fire station on Tuesday.
The roughly 30-foot, 1,900-pound beam was acquired by firefighters who approached the New York City-based committee in charge of relics from the Lower Manhattan site.
"If you imagine a drinking straw bent in half, then twisted all to heck, that's what it looks like," said Reggie Sully of McCoy Construction, who was overseeing the installation.
A crane is placing the vaguely V-shaped mass onto a pedestal next to the fire station at 445 Rexford Drive, where it will remained covered for the rest of the summer and be unveiled during a dedication set for Sept. 11.
McCoy said all funds for the memorial were privately raised.
"When I put out the bid for the concrete work, all I got back was a note with the owners' initials," he said. "When I called to find out what that meant, I was told it meant there was no charge."
That alone was worth about $50,000, he said.
The sculpture will be part of the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden.
