Father's Day Reflections: Suzanne Marques of CBS2/KCAL9

Happy Father' Day.

It's always difficult for me to pick out a greeting card for Father's Day. My dad doesn't golf. He wasn't Mr. Fix It around the house. He liked working on cars. Where are those cards?

When I read the cards that are overly sentimental, it doesn't seem right. My dad has always been on the tougher side. Gushing words of love would make us both uncomfortable, yet a card that states simply "Happy Father's Day," seems curt when alone on the paper.

Where are the cards for the dads who like to race cars and watch boxing? My dad also likes to sail. He taught me how in Los Alamitos bay, criss-crossing patiently for hours with me in a tiny boat.

I am too old to make a card for my dad I suppose, but if I did, the photo above would be the cover.

I would tell dad, I'll bet you miss those carefree days as a teenager doing what you love best, working on your car with your shirt off on a hot Southern California afternoon. Did you imagine you'd raise three kids? You'd send two off to college and you still work with your namesake today, who loves cars as much as you.

A little over a year ago, you'd see Jerry III arrive in the world, a blue-eyed towhead, the apple of your eye.

I can't believe you're in your 60's either. You're right. Each year passes more quickly than the last.

This father's day I'd like to tell my dad thank you. I've learned a lot from you. How to drive a stick shift, sail, negotiate and fix a tire. Okay, I still refuse to learn the last. We have AAA for a reason. You're the one who loves to explore different cultures, religions, politics. You've made me inquisitive about the world. You love to write and speak and I've made it my career.

We both love films with a dark side and I'm still impressed you can figure out what the heck David Lynch meant in Mulholland Drive.
You love those tragic conceptual French & Spanish films that leave me confused half the time. You avoid sad American films because they leave you depressed. It happens to me too.

Remember when we were talking about the Jon Lovitz commercial where he claims to have authored the phone book? I was like, "He did?!" You just looked at me. There was no laugh, no disappointment in your face, even if you may have been dying inside. You just waited for me to figure it out. Even typing this now, I feel like a big idiot, but I did eventually figure it out. Let the record state: I thought maybe he came up with the concept. I realize that's silly too.

We are both always right, stubborn, passionate and have a soft side for others, particularly when they do the thing that is so difficult for us to do, let other people in when we are weak.

Many of the guys you employ at your shop are the guys who have run out of second chances, guys everyone else has given up on, but you teach them your passion and they're changed men, contributing to society and doing what they love too.

I appreciate the support you've given me, our family and so many others in this world.

Happy father's day!

Love,
Suzanne
