PASADENA (CBS) — A youth boot camp instructor is facing charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and extortion after being arrested by Pasadena police on May 27.
Kelvin “Sarge” McFarland, 40, of Monrovia is accused for handcuffing a teen who was truant, taking him to a family member’s home and demanding an unknown amount of money for his services before releasing him.
Authorities said McFarland also tried to persuade the family to enroll the 14-year-old in his boot camp, “Family 1st Growth Camp.”
McFarland is being held on a $285,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 13.
Pasadena police think there may be other victims whom he tried to solicit money from. Anyone wanting to report a similar crime should contact the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241.
