Tenants Evacuated After Police Find Homemade Bombs In Westside Apartment
SANTA MONICA (CBS) — A search of a Westside apartment building uncovered several homemade bombs on Thursday, forcing police to evacuate residents from the area.
KNX 1070’s Pete Demetriou reports a routine probation in Santa Monica check turned out to be anything but routine.
Sgt. Richard Lewis said the explosive discovery was made at an apartment on 12th Street just off Wilshire Blvd.
Police say they found a 17-year-old man inside reportedly under the influence of narcotics. A search of the residence was conducted and investigators uncovered a lot of contraband, including a 3-inch PVC pipe bomb.
“Along with that, they found some firecrackers and M-80s,” said Lewis.
Tenants in the apartment building were evacuated for three hours as the L.A. County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad destroyed three improvised bombs.
The 17-year-old arrested was booked on counts of possession and manufacture of explosive devices — charges that carry a state prison sentence if he is convicted.
