Parolee, Transient Identified In Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot by an undercover detective during a confrontation in downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting happened about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth and Spring streets. Dale Garrett, 51, died at a hospital.

Police say Garrett, a transient and a parolee, approached an undercover detective and offered to sell drugs to one of them.

"Garrett then verbally threatened to kill the detective, while simultaneously retrieving a seven-inch folding saw," police said, which is when the detective shot him.
