WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled House has easily passed the last of three bills to expedite and expand oil and gas drilling.

In a 243-179 vote Thursday, the House passed a measure that would open up areas off the West and East coasts,Alaskaand the easternGulf of Mexicoto drilling. The Obama administration pulled back on leasing in some of those spots after the Gulf oil spill last year to further evaluate the environmental consequences. It never considered drilling in the Pacific.

The bill directs the Interior Department to select lease areas based on how much oil and gas they contain.

The measure joins two others passed earlier by the House to speed up drilling and leasing.

None is likely to pass the Senate. All are opposed by the White House.

Too bad. It would have been nice to get off our dependency on foreign oil where unrest in the Middle East can drive up the price of our gas.

  2. William Joseph Miller says:

There is not enough oil or natural gas in the US to meet our needs. In addition, refineries are cutting back their production, and they are exporting 10 to 20 % of the gasoline and diesel fuel they produce. This is all an effort to maximize profits. (Read the lead article by Ron White, published in the Los Angeles Times, April 28,2011.)

Also forget about those commericals put out by Exxon Oil. They’re fabrications. There is not as much natural gas in shale as Exxon Mobil would like us to believe. The natural gas production from those wells drops by 80% after the first year. which means more expensive drilling. IN addition, fracking requires an endless supply of toxic chemicals and water. In addition all the vehicles we use to transport this equipment, water and chemicals use gasoline or diesel, raising the price of fuel. So the amout of oil and natural gas we can drill for economically is rather limited.
These are the reasons we need to move to clean energy ASAP.
