UC Mulls Plan To Boost Tuition Fees For Bigger Schools

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Should students who attend the state's biggest universities pay more in tuition fees?

KNX 1070's Tom Reopelle reports the University of California system thinks so, and it may implement varying tuitions across its ten campuses statewide — just not anytime soon.

Under the proposal, students would pay higher tuitions to attend high-ranked schools like UCLA or UC San Diego - where fees are as high as $20,021 for non-residents - in comparison to smaller schools like UC Riverside or UC Merced.

Currently, all students across the UC system pay the same fees, but as California struggles to fill its $16 billion budget deficit, all options are on the table.

"At this point, it's not a formal proposal, but in the face of dwindling state support, the university will have to look at several options in terms of how to preserve the excellence of the institution and the access for students," said UC official Ricardo Vasquez.

While proponents like Vasquez argue the move could raise additional revenue for the school system, critics call the proposal an elitist idea that will ultimately ruin the schools.
