LA Unified Plans Short Day So Teachers Can Rally For State Funding
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Unified School District plans a shorter classroom day next week so teachers can demonstrate for state funding.
The Los Angeles Times says the district will dismiss classes at various times on May 13 but it could be up to several hours early. Schools will have to make up the lost hours later in the year.
The nation's second-largest school district is facing a nearly $408-million budget deficit. The shortened day will allow teachers to attend an afternoon rally urging state lawmakers to place tax extensions on the fall ballot to keep funding the schools.
Originally, teachers planned a morning rally but school officials said that would disrupt mandatory state testing being held that day.
