Newport Beach Police Want To Fine Rowdy Partiers

NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — The Newport Beach Police Department wants the city to levy fines against those who throw and attend rowdy parties.

The department will take the proposal to the City Council Tuesday for discussion. A vote will come later.

Lt. Bill Hartford told The Orange County Register the proposal targets gatherings of eight or more people at parties police consider loud and unruly.

The plan says everyone attending could be fined up to $3,000 and the home would be tagged for six months.

Partygoers in tagged rental homes would face fines up to $8,000.

Hartford say it is illegal in most cities to set fines over $1,000 for municipal code violations, but Newport Beach is a charter city so that rule does not apply.
